Mali is predominantly an Islamic country, however present day culture encompasses elements of animism and other traditional beliefs and ways of life. These are the themes explored by photographer, Sabera Bham in her journey across Mali in 2000.

The architectural landscape is dominated by structurally unique mosques seen from a distance. The photo above shows the largest mud structure in the world, which is The Great Mosque of Djenné rebuilt in 1907.

Mali bats heads
These bat-heads were on sale on a market stall, in the capital city, Bamako. They sell ‘ingredients’ for black magic and healing. These stalls sell all sorts of things, such as Porcupine quills, snake heads, animal hair. These are all used for medicinal and black magic purposes.
